ICC Book

Any skipper must ensure they are aware of any requirements for qualification before entering another countries jurisdiction.

The requirement for evidence of competence varies from country to country. Sometimes it is required for coastal waters, sometimes for inland waters, sometimes for neither and sometimes for both.

If a boat owner requires evidence of competence when visiting another European country the ICC will frequently suffice. It is generally a useful and in some countries essential document to carry and will generally be accepted where proof of competence is required. It can also be useful for people wishing to charter.

Many European countries require the skipper of a pleasure craft to be able to provide evidence of his or her competence, however in practice documentary evidence may seldom be inspected.

An ICC is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

Download the ICC Application form which also explains the process and verify eligibility.

CEVNI - Code Européen des Voies de la Navigation Intérieures

CEVNI BookApplicants requiring a certificate valid for inland waters must pass a written test on the CEVNI rules (European Inland Waterways Regulations). This is a multiple choice question paper based on the rules laid out in the book European Waterways Regulations.

A valid ICC is often required for cruising Europe’s inland waters. To validate your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for inland waters you must take the CEVNI test, which checks your knowledge of the rules and signs that skippers of pleasure craft are expected to know and follow.
